Is 13 X19 an Easy Frame Size to Find
What frame size do you use for 13 x 19 prints?
What frame size do you use for 13 x 19 prints?
May 20, 2007
I have been printing strictly 8 x10s using 16 x 20 frames and I am
happy with that. I am going to start printing 13 x 19 prints and
would like to know what people use. I just got one Nielsen 21 x 27
frame to try to see how the final print looks rather than deciding on
a logical/mathematical basis before I purchase a large stock of frames.
Since a 13 x 19 print does not fit the ratio of a 35mm sensor how do
you compromise when printing at this size? Do you keep the 35mm
ratio on prints? This is new to me so I wonder what people do.

Edurado, check these out. http://www.dickblick.com/zz170/85/ I'm not sure what size mattes you like, I like to use double mattes. I'm sure that they have mattes for all those frames. So far my largest print size has been on 11x17(picture size 11x14) I use 16x20 frames. I recently got some 13x19 paper from HP so I will be looking for something larger than 16x20.
Good luck, TomW.

I've been using 18 X 24 inch frames. It's a standard premade size that I can find in some craft shops, so the frames are inexpensive. And the proportions look good to me with a single mat.

What I do...
I like to print an image size of 12 x 18 on my 13 x 19 paper. It lets me print the full 2:3 proportion of my 35mm film or DSLR format.
I set the mat opening to 12.5 x 18.5, which many places are offering as a standard ready cut mat. This leaves 1/4" of border around the image, so I can title/sign the print and leave it visible after matting.
Finally, I frame it in an 18 x 24 frame -- again, a standard, readily available size -- which leaves and equal mat border around the entire image.
Sometimes I'll use a 22 x 28 frame, which gives more mat border around the image, but still equal. Depends on the image, really.

I do the same thing, print 18.5 and 12.5 and I double matte then use 18X24 frames.

Re: What frame size do you use for 13 x 19 prints?
I print to 12x18 leaving a half inch white border all around and have the mat window set to 12 x18 as well - no white border showing (I title and sign the mat) and frame to 18x24.

This sounds quite good Ron as a 6 x 6 mat all around the print sounds good. I give this a try!

Th idea of leaving space in the print sounds quite sound..and 18 x 24 or even 22 x 28 works well with the 40 x 32 matting boards I am getting.

Re: Thank you Rick and John!
Very good topic, I own an Epson 2200, I have done few 13"x19" prints, but I do more 11x14 to frame them on 16"x20"
A 18"x24" fram will do great.
I also bough the logan mat cutter, So I will be making my own mats.
I worked the last few month on a custom framing store as part time after my day job, so I got to learn a lot new things to try on my own work.
Thanks

I mat and frame pictues that are this size quite frequently, and I aways mat/frame them to 20X25. This size shows off the image very dramatically.

Curious why not 20x26? Even 3.5 inch all the way around, unless you are bottom weighting.

Re: Thank you Rick and John!
I have an Epson 1280 and now have an Epson 4800 . I print in 13x19 often and find that an 18x24 frame size works very nicely. It gives a 2 1/2 border on all four sides and is a standard frame size so it is easy to find frames just about anywhere you go. The company I purchase from, http://www.redimat.com has this as a standard size available in a huge variety of materials and colors.
